On Tuesday, March 20th the Sullivan City Council will hold a hearing on possibly enacting a Comprehensive Smoke-Free Ordinance. We applaud the vision of the Councilmembers in taking an interest to protect the health of Sullivan City residents and workers.

Please join us in supporting a 100% smoke-free ordinance for Sullivan City, which will protect ALL workers from the dangers of second-hand smoke. EVERYONE deserves the right to work in a smoke-free environment.

Wednesday, March 21st is Kick Butts Day, a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. On that day from 7:00pm to 8:00pm, the Tobacco Prevention and Control Coalition of Hidalgo County youth group is planning a candlelight vigil in memoriam of those who lost their lives to tobacco. This event will take place at Archer Park, located at 101 N. Main St. in McAllen.

All members of the community are invited to attend this youth-led event as they pay tribute to their loved ones, and to learn more about the Coalition and its community impact. For those trying to quit or thinking of quitting, there will be free resources available to support your journey.

The TPCC Youth Group will be doing a cigarette butt cleanup along 17th Street in downtown McAllen. This volunteer activity is an effort to bring public awareness of the Smoke Free Ordinance in McAllen which has been in effect since January of this year. This will also help beautify our city by cleaning up all the littered cigarette butts along this street.
